How it works
The MRS consists of 11 items, each rated from 0 (no symptoms) to 4 (very severe). The 11 items cover: hot flashes/sweating, heart discomfort, sleep problems, depressive mood, irritability, anxiety, physical and mental exhaustion, sexual problems, bladder problems, vaginal dryness, and joint/muscle discomfort.

- Scores range from 0 (no symptoms) to 44 (maximum severity)
- Used in medical research worldwide
Three subscales
Somatic subscale (items 1-3, 11): hot flashes, heart complaints, sleep, joint pain. Maximum score: 16. Psychological subscale (items 4-7): depressed mood, irritability, anxiety, exhaustion. Maximum score: 16. Urogenital subscale (items 8-10): sexual problems, bladder issues, vaginal dryness. Maximum score: 12. Total MRS score ranges from 0 to 44.
Interpreting your score
There is no single 'good' or 'bad' score — what matters most is how your score changes over time. A clinically significant improvement is generally considered a 5+ point drop in total score. Your score helps quantify your experience in a way that is meaningful to healthcare providers.
Using MRS with your doctor
Bring your MRS trend chart to your appointments. It gives your doctor an objective, standardized measure of your symptom severity over time, making it easier to evaluate whether treatments are working and to make informed decisions about your care plan.
